Nature

Spirits are generally classified by how they form, not how they behave, so within a certain spirit 'species' there can be a range of personalities and skills. People have devised a class system for spirits, based on what their apparent 'purpose' is. Bosprits, and other small spirits, are generally not combative or aggressive, so some classes have never been observed in them. Below is a list of current known bosprit classes. These may shape bosprit behaviour, but actual temperament can still vary wildly. Unlike ghosts, bosprits are not tied to their place of creation, although they may choose to stay. That means that even though bosprits do not grow in cities or deserts, they may choose to settle in one.

Guardians

Guardian spirits protect people, objects, animals or places. They will stay with their charge at all costs, and usually try to prevent harm. This may mean that they watch a particular family for generations, or maybe try to preserve a small creek, or a tree. Perhaps they guard an entire forest, or they spend many years trying to stop the decay of their favourite house. Guardian spirits tend to be more sedentary than other classes, as well as more shy. They attach strongly to one particular place, although there are many approaches they may take to protection. However most do not like trespassers or anything that could potentially damage their charge.

Wanderers

Wandering spirits live to travel. They are not fulfilled unless they are seeing or learning something new. For some, this may mean discovering every single inch of their forest, while others will wander the globe, or deep into The Between. Whether spirits remain wanderers for the entirety of their existence or eventually 'settle down' into another class is currently unknown.

Seekers

Seeker spirits collect things. These things may be tangible - litter, pretty flowers, old books - or they may be intangible, like knowledge on new species or interesting recipes. Unlike guardian spirits, seekers are not compelled to preserve or stay with their collections, rather constantly expand on it. Seeker spirits are often called on for their extensive and specialised information or resources. Seeker spirits are generally more social, as they will reach out to other beings for help in their searches.

Tricksters

As the name suggests, trickster spirits delight in deceit and misdirection. They are the most playful class, although their tricks may range from harmless fun to actively malicious. The motive for a tricksters behaviour can also vary, as some may resent trespassers on their territory, while others simply want friends to join in their games. In general, tricksters are more likely to stay in the same place than seekers or wanderers, but they don't have the protective drive of guardians.

Companions

Companion spirits could be considered a sub-class of guardian spirits. They attach themselves a living creature, and accompany or guide it. Some companions may simply keep company for the length of a journey, while others will stay for life, or for many lifetimes. They are distinct from guardians in that they don't have the ties to a particular place, and stay more for companionship than protection. They are the most friendly of spirits, although they often reflect the personality of their parter.
