World

The world of bosprits looks very much like our own. There are people and animals, technology and wilderness. There are no fantastical beasts or magical powers. However there are spirits (which include bosprits) and ghosts, wandering the spaces between life and death, and they bring their own kind of magic to the world.

The Between

Spirits and ghosts have access to an extra dimension, sometimes thought to be 'between' life and death. The Between, also called Limbo, is not a separate place so much as a new direction. As creatures head deeper into Limbo, they fade from the real world. At the surface, this space may look nearly identical to its parallel in the real world, albeit with more spirits. However the further you wander from 'life' or the real world, the more alien Limbo becomes. Trees become huge and twisted, buildings rot and crumble, stars become visible and the spirits get bigger and more strange. People believe that if you traveled far enough into The Between you would eventually reach the realm of the dead. However past a certain point, things stop returning. Whatever roams the deep spaces of The Between protects its secrets, and the dead have never returned.

Bosprits can access The Between, however they cannot bring living creatures in with them. They can use this place to disappear from the real world, explore, speak to other spirits, or travel faster between places. Space and time become more strange the deeper you travel into Limbo - the extent of this is up to interpretation. If they spend a day in Limbo, perhaps 100 years have passed in the real world... or perhaps no time at all.

Ghosts

Everything that lives and dies has a soul, a little bit of spirit trapped in a physical body. Sometimes, when something dies, it leaves a bit of this soul behind, bearing the memories and personality of the living creature. These lost souls are ghosts. Some are little more than impressions left behind, while others are awake and entirely aware of their nature.

Spirits

The act of many creatures living and dying leaves spiritual energy. Over time, these scraps of spiritual detritus accumulate around a Focus and give birth to a variety of spirit creatures. Unlike ghosts, spirits do not have a past life - they are entirely new creatures. They can take on a variety of forms and personalities, depending on where and how they were formed. Bosprits are simply a single type of small spirit.
