Backstory

Starling was once a world renowned opera singer. At once lauded and reviled, he was a sensation everywhere he went. Reviewers praised his fine voice and musical precision; everyone who knew him cursed his vanity and dramatic tendencies. People in his vicinity were prey to lecherous looks and snide bitching behind their backs, yet nevertheless he was always invited back because... well who knows really. He was famous. One day, towards the end of an intensive worldwide tour, he was discovered murdered inside a large and luxurious private aviary.

It wasn't pretty. Detectives were thoroughly perplexed by the case, for it appeared he'd been poisoned, stabbed and bashed over the head. His three girlfriends (who had just met) were questioned, as was the aviary keeper, and rival singer Julian who was also on tour. All parties involved thoroughly slandered Starling's name and good nature, but denied any involvement in his death. His girlfriends said that he'd been a bit of a pervert, "but y'know, rich I guess" and that they hadn't thought to kill him until that day. The aviary keeper (who also happened to be one of the girlfriend's dad) said that Starling's voice was annoying and he'd been rude to the birds "but no one would commit murder over some insulted birds, amiright?". Julian simply sniffed and said "while it was clearly Starling who stole my particular collar flair, I wouldn't kill the man because he was a delusional wannabe."

When insufficient evidence was found to pin the murder on any of the suspects the case was abandoned, since no one really liked him enough to pursue it. In that beautiful aviary, the esk Starling is still fuming at his fall from grace. Sometime shortly after his death he had been transformed, and was now trapped at the site of his murder forever. He's more than happy to complain about his situation to anyone who will listen (usually only the birds).

The birds tolerate him, because they love to gossip as much as he does. He's small enough to not offer a threat, although he's still as attention-seeking as ever. Every so often one of the larger parrots may perch on him when he gets too annoying. Humans entering the aviary however are subject to suspiciously well aimed bird droppings and a strange, beguiling scent. If they allowed the enchantment to lull them, and listened closer, they might be able to hear Starling mourning his lost life in haunting operatic tones.
